History of the Battleground Poll
Since 1991, the Battleground Poll has accurately portraying the political climate through five Presidential and four mid-term election cycles. We have conducted thirty-eight individual surveys and daily tracking throughout the fall of five presidential cycles totaling over 80,000 interviews among voters.
Besides accuracy, the keys to the Battleground Poll’s success and longevity are consistency and depth of analysis. The Battleground Poll has used consistent sampling and questionnaire language for the past twenty years while other public polls make occasional changes and adjustments to sampling and wording of key questions in order to make the results more newsworthy. These changes make comparisons across time very difficult. Using consistent sampling and language means that the results of the latest Battleground Poll can be directly compared to survey results from 1991. That said, the Battleground has made room for new and rotating questions from poll to poll, to ensure that the issues of the day are covered.
Also unique and important to the Battleground Poll is the depth of analysis. Unlike many other polls which are sponsored by one organization, the Battleground Poll is analyzed and presented separately by The Tarrance Group and Lake Research Partners.
This nationally recognized series of scientific surveys is unique to the industry, in that it offers the distinct perspectives of two top pollsters from different sides of the aisle. POLITICO, the leader in political news media, and the George Washington University are sponsors of the POLITICO-GW Battleground Poll.
The University’s role in the poll is guided by the Graduate School of Political Management. GW’s public affairs, public policy and international affairs programs (undergraduate and graduate) are frequently ranked highly in leading publications, including recognition among the Top 10 “Most Politically Active” colleges and universities in the 2005 Kaplan/Newsweek How to Get Into College guide. The George Washington University also is one of the nation’s best schools in fostering social responsibility and public service, according to the Princeton Review and Washington Monthly, which both included the University among its top-rated schools for community service in 2005.
